1999年にノルウェー出身のKjell Ekhornとイギリス出身のJon Forssが設立したグラフィックデザイン•タイポグラフィを主体とするクリエイティブスタジオNON-FORMAT。
拠点はロンドンでNON-FORMAT以前はEkhornForss Limitedという名前で活動していたという。2007年春(4月)にはDie Gestalten Verlagから過去の作品を集めたアート本が出版。

Non-Format is a Creative team comprising Kjell Ekhorn (Norwegian) and Jon Forss (British).
They work on a range of projects including art direction, design and illustration for music industry, arts & culture, fashion and advertising clients.
They also art directed the monthly music magazine The Wire between 2001 and 2005.


Hitspaper：Non-Formatが設立された背景を教えて下さい。
John & Kjell：私達は1999年に共通の友人に紹介されて初めて知り合ったのですが、その時デザインについて何時間もディベートして意気投合して、それがきっかけで一緒に働き始めたのです。
それから1年後、CDパッケージやThe Wire Magazineのデザインを共同で制作し続けていよいよEkhornForss Limitedという名前で会社を起こしたのです。
しかしその会社名のスペリングでトラブルがあった為、それからまもなくして現在でも使用しているNon-Formatという名前を名付けたのです。

Hitspaper：Could you tell us the reason and background of establishing NON-FORMAT?
John & Kjell：When we were introduced by a mutual friend in 1999 we found ourselves chatting about design for hours at the time and it became quite quickly apparent that it would be interesting working together.
A year or so after starting collaborating on music packaging we took on the redesign and art direction of The Wire magazine and set up EkhornForss Limited as the official company name.
We then adopted the name Non-Format shortly afterwards as we were finding people were having a little trouble spelling our names.






Hitspaper：作品に対するアイデンティティや理念を教えて下さい。
John & Kjell：二人で一緒に働き始めた当初は全くマニフェストといわれるものは存在しませんでした。
しかしこうして7年経過した今振りかってみると私たちの作品に一貫したマニフェストを見てとることができます。
根底に流れるものはビジュアルアプローチをイラストでや写真、タイポグラフィといった手法で必ず一つに方向にフォーカスをさせるということです。
その様に自然になっている背景にはきっと我々が物事の核心を突き詰めてそれまでのプロセス楽しみながら解いていくのが好きだからだと思います。

Hitspaper：What is the identity and philosophy of your works?
John & Kjell：When we first started working together we didn't really have any kind of company manifesto but now that we can look back on
seven years' worth of work we can see that there are certain preoccupations that manifest themselves in our work.
We are very keen to keep our designs focused in one direction; we decide on one visual approach, whether that's illustrative, photographic, typographic or a combination of two or more of these disciplines and make sure the project conveys one strong message as clearly as possible.
We like to get to heart of a brief and enjoy the process of problem solving.





Hitspaper：制作過程においてKjellとJonの役割りを教えて下さい。
John & Kjell：私たちの全ての作品は長年1つのスタジオで努力を続けてきた結果です。
初期の頃こそ私達の役割りはKjellがバックグラウンドイメージを制作し、Johnがタイポグラィを制作するという形でしたが
長い間二人で制作することによりそういった役割り以上の関係が構築されて今までとは異なった自分達でも驚くようなデザインを生み出してきていると思います。

Hitspaper：Could you tell us about the role in Kjell and Jon?
John & Kjell：All our work is the result of a constant collaborative effort between two individuals locked in one studio for many years.
Non-Format's early work was the result of Kjell's background in image-making and Jon's preoccupations with typography
but over the years the two approaches have fused into something quite different than the sums of its parts and the resulting designs have sometimes taken even us by surprise.






Hitspaper：クリエーターにとって最も重要な要素は何だと思いますか？
John & Kjell：自分自身の本当の声を聞くこと。常に新しいことに挑戦すること。

Hitspaper：What do you think is the most important elements for creator?
John & Kjell：To find your own voice. To keep trying new things.





Hitspaper：ロンドンという都市からインスピレーションを受けていますか？
John & Kjell：私達は特にロンドンに住んでいるからといってそれを作品に取り込もうとはしていません。
それよりも私達が正しいと感じるものを作品に吹き込んでいます。
もし私達の作品がそのような見えるのならそれはきっとロンドンの中心部に住んでいるという事実がそう見せているのでしょう。

Hitspaper：Does London give you any inspration?
John & Kjell：We don't try to inject elements into our work that are specifically about London, we just work in a way that feels right to us.
If it looks like the work is obviously from a London-based studio that probably has more to do with the fact that we both live in the centre of London.






Hitspaper：近年のテクノジーの発達の影響をどのように捉えていますか？
John & Kjell：テクノロジーの成果はApple Macの出現から深く私たちの作品に影響を与えています。
また近年ではフォトグラフィー、イラストレーション、タイポグラフィー、グラフィックデザインの境界線がぼやけてきているのではないでしょうか、、、

Hitspaper：Do you think the development of technology we have been exposed in the recent years has affected the ways you?
John & Kjell：The developments in technology have affected our work in the most profound ways ever since the advent of the Apple Mac.
In recent years though we have seen technology allow for a greater overlap of disciplines and a blurring of the boundaries between photography, illustration, typography and graphic design.





Hitspaper：将来の計画を教えて下さい。
John & Kjell：私達はNon-Formatをもう少し事業拡大する為にアメリカに新しいスタジオを開くつもりです。
多くの刺激的でクリエイティブな才能とコラボレーションすることを楽しみにしています。

Hitspaper：Could you tell us about your vision toward the Future?
John & Kjell：We are going to expand Non-Format and open a new studio in the US.
We're very much looking forward to collaborating with more exciting creative talent and will be looking to introduce moving images into our work.






Hitspaper：東京とそのクリエイティブシーンの印象を教えて下さい。
John & Kjell：私達は日本のイメージとデザインに長年魅了されてきました。
日本の作品を見るとそれから感じるエモーションがすんなり一体化して入り込んできて、
これにより自分達の作品にもエモーションを吹き込むことができていると思います。
私達は自分自身の本能を信じているので、多くの日本人デザイナーに感謝したい気持ちで一杯です。

Hitspaper：How do you have some impression of Tokyo and creative sene?
John & Kjell：We are both fascinated by Japanese design and image-making and have been for many years.
We identify very much with the sense of emotion that is apparent in much Japanese work and
we have responded to this by allowing a more emotive response to flourish in much of our own work.
We are learning to trust our instincts and I think we have many Japanese designers to thank for that.






Hitspaper：最後に日本人にメッセージを戴けますか？
John & Kjell：長年に渡って素晴らしいビジュアルとクリエイティブインスピレーションをありがとうございます。
