ロンドンを拠点に活動するデザインスタジオHawaii Design。Paul McAnellyによって2005年に設立されたまだ若いスタジオだが、非常に安定したクオリティのアートワークを創り続けけている。今回は創始者でアートディレター兼デザイナーであるPaul McAnellyに話を聞いた。
Hitspaper：あなたのスタジオのバックグランドを教えて下さい。
Paul：Hawaiiは2005年にPaul McAnellyによって設立されました。
スタジオはロンドンにあり、グラフィックデザイン、イラストレーション、アートディレクションを行っています。
私たちはプリントを心から愛するというコンセプトを持っていてユニークであり、オリジナルな作品を創り上げる事に自信を持っています。

Hitspaper：Can you tell us your studio background?
Paul：Hawaii was established in 2005 by Paul McAnelly.
Based in London the studio offers a diverse range of skills including Design, Illustration and Art Direction.
The studio prides itself on creating unique, original work from concept to print.

Hitspaper：自信の作品中の特徴となるアイデンティティは何でしょうか？
Paul：私たちはある一定のスタイルを持たないよう、そして可能な限りインデビジュアルでないように心掛けています。
しかし、印刷の可能性を追求するということは常に考えていますね。
いずれにしろ、私たちは可能な限り今までとは異なったクリエイティブを創造していきたいです。
Hitspaper：How would you characterses the identity of your works?
Paul：We try not to have a house style and be individual as possible.
We are always trying to push the bounderies of print and finishing.
We love what we do and try to work in as many different creative areas as possible.

Hitspaper：作品を通じて一貫したコンセプトはありますか？
Paul：ハイエンドであり仕事としても満足感を得ることですね。
またクライアントと私達双方が幸せで居られることを心掛けています。
Hitspaper：Please tell us the consistent concept of your work and project?
Paul：High end production and job satisfaction, when the client is happy we are very happy.

Hitspaper：あなたの作品"In house"について教えて下さい。非常に興味深いので、、、
Paul：勿論。
これは200冊限定の特別なプロダクトで、過去一緒に仕事をさせてもらったクライアントと今後潜在的に開拓出来そうなクライアントに送った実験的な作品ですね。
作品を説明すると3つの異なったプロセスで制作されたポスターで構成されていて、
紙は私たちが愛してやまない東京にあるTakeoのものですね。
この紙は、半透明で表面に変化を持たせる場合非常に有効なんですよ。
Hitspaper：Your work called "In house" is interesting.Could you explain it, please?
Paul：Ah yes! This is very special and limited to only 200 produced.
We wanted to create a set of work that we could send to clients we have already worked with and also potential clients to introduce ourselves, some to treasure and admire.
We pride ourself on print production and experimentation.
The work consists of 3 posters all different using various print processes.
One of our paper stocks we used was sourced from a company in Tokyo called Takeo and we would like to thank them.
This paper is very special as when you apply to the surface the paper becomes translucent.

Hitspaper：グラフィクデザインそしてアートは多くの流行が付き物です。現在のこの流れをどのように考えますか？
Paul：私は幸運なことに様々な場所に旅行をしてそして私が見る限り、文化やその遺産を通じてアーティストの個性が形成されているように思いますね。
そして日本はビジュアライズとしても刺激的だと思いますよ。
Hitspaper：Graphic design and art is accompanied by many trends, What do you think about universal among all of them?
Paul：Im very fortunate to travel alot with work and what I see is the personality of not only the artist coming through the works we see but the culture and heritage of where the artists is from.
Japan is very visually stimulating.

Hitspaper：現在、世界では様々な悲しい問題が起こっています。戦争やテロ、経済格差など。
こうした社会問題についてのあなたの考えを教えて下さい。クリエーターとして何か出来ることはないでしょうか？
Paul：私は政治家ではないですが、世界には対立・紛争があり、極めて実利主義的になってきていますね。
それは貪欲と妬みが多くの原因なのではないでしょうか。
Hitspaper：There are alot of sad problems such as war, terror, economic discrepancy...etc. Please tell us your thought for a social problem caused in the world?
Paul：Im not a politician but there does seem to be alot of conflict in the world.
Greed and envy seems to be the cause of alot of it.
The world has become extremely materialistic.
Hitspaper：将来試したいことはありますか？
Paul：世界中のクライアントと仕事をしたいと思っています。
航空会社のブランディングとかいいですね。
Hitspaper：Is there anything you'd like to try in the future?
Paul：I think we would love to work with more companies in other parts of the world.
Branding an airline would be amazing.

Hitspaper：最後に日本人に向けてメッセージをお願いします。
Paul：私たちは本当に日本に訪れて彼らの親切ややさしさに感謝しています。
まず一番始めにいつも歓迎して戴いてありがとうと言いたいです。

Paul：We really love what we do and we love coming to Japan, everybody is so kind and friendly.
First of all we would like to say a big thankyou to welcoming Hawaii to JAPAN (everytime we come over).
Secondly dont be afraid to get in contact with us we would love to see peoples work and come to our studio.
Also for us to work with a Japanese company would be fantastic! Thanyou for this opportunity to showcase our work it means alot.
