元デザイナーショックのStefan GandlとChristoph Grünbergerによって設立されたデザインスタジオ［Neubau］。イラストレーターなどで編集可能なデザインリソース集［Neubau Welt］で一躍デザイン業界で注目を集め、昨年9月には待望の第二弾［Neubau Modul］をGestaltenよりリリース。益々勢いに乗る彼らにNeubau Modulの制作や今後のプロジェクトについて話を聞いた。

Hitspaper：あなたが出版したNeubau Modulをデザインに興味がない人間に伝えたいのですが、、、
Stefan： Neubau Modulは主にデザインする上で必要なパターンを提供するブックです。
多種類のパターン柄があるのでデザインする場合非常に重宝すると思いますよ。
例えばグラフィック、スクリーン、テキスタイルデザイン、イラストレーション、建築、プロダクト、モーションデザインといったものですね。
Neubau Modulというタイトルはモジュールシステムを表していて、パターンそれぞれ特性としてお互いにシームレスな連続性があることと、それぞれのモジュールの組み合わせが無数にあることから、モジュールという意味合いを含蓄させることが、的確な表現だと思いました。

Neubau WeltとNeubau Modul見て戴ければ解ると思いますが、単なるデザイン本だけでなくプレミアムカタログ、そして、インスピレーションソースとして成立していると思います。その上、2031個のパターンによる包括的なデジタルアーカイブとも言えます。
仕様について言及するとすれば、それらのパターンはベクターデータとビットマップデータがフォーマットになっていて、同様に類推、高解像度で保存されたtiffファイルも同梱されています。加えて、それらのパターンは実際、Adobe IllustratorやPhotoshopのようなソフトで編集可能です。
それによって労力をかけることなくアートワークを制作することが出来ると思います。

Hitspaper：How could Neubau Modul be described to someone who is not into design?
Stefan：Neubau Modul is the book of surface and filling patterns.
These are found wherever surfaces have to be allocated with structures.
Such as in graphic, screen or textile design, illustration, architecture, product or motion design.
The title Neubau Modul describes a modular system, in this precise case modules composed of patterns, which because of their properties allow for seamless stringing together and infinite combination of the modules with each other.

As seen in Neubau Welt, Neubau Modul not only forms a premium catalogue and source of inspiration, but furthermore delivers a comprehensive digital archive of 2031 base patterns.
According to the target groups mentioned, these patterns are provided licence free in vector and bitmap formats, as well as analogically drawn hi-res tiff files.

Moreover, the archive is available as a practical swatch library in customary standard programs such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, which facilitates usage of the library without performace loss.

Hitspaper：先に出版されたNeabau Weltと比べて、今作はよりアブストラクトでテクニカルになったように思えます。
どのようにこういったラジカルな思い付きが生まれたのでしょうか？また以前のNeabau Weltと同じターゲットを狙ったのでしょうか？
Stefan：Neubau Modulは独自のユーティリティ性を持っています。しかし、Neabau Weltとも依然として通じるものもあると思っています。
Neubau Weltを制作する上でインスピレーションを受けたのは現実の形状をマッピングしたものであり、Neubau Modulでは基本的なパターン例えば円、四角、三角形、直線といったグラフィックエレメントをベースとしています。

グラフィックの縮図であるといった一貫した存続性として捉えればNBMからの変化は全くないと言えますね。
しかし一方でNBMは形状というものを通じて審美眼は変遷していますね。
それはNBMは最終的な結果としてスタイリスティックスな流行から完璧に分離したことが言えます。
ナラティブもしくはエモーショナルな野心から解放され、その事がNBMのオリジナリティとして展開を始めているのです。

Hitspaper：Compared to its predecessor Neubau Welt, Neubau Modul seems much more abstract and technical.
How did this radical change occur, or do you want to target the same people as with Neubau Welt?
Stefan：Neubau Modul is and independent utility, yet it remains compatible and combinable with Neubau Welt.
While the Leraset inspired Neubau Welt still works as a mapping of a concrete form, Neubau Modul concentrates on the base patterns forged from graphic base elements (circle, square, triangle, line).

In this respect NBM is not so much a change, but a consistent continuation of graphic reduction.
While NBW transports a timeless esthetic through the form of silhouettes, the NBM archive achieves a complete detachment from eventual stylistic trends.
The liberation from narrative or emotional ambitions significantly expands the domain of NBM.

Hitspaper：2,000を超えるパターンをどのように制作したのですか？
Stefan：NBMはパターンモジュールをベースとしたアーカイブを提供します。そしてその目的を念頭において制作しました。
その結果、6つの幾何学的な形状のもの(円、四角、二等辺三角形、直角三角形、六角形、サイズや距離、オフセット、アウトラインといった特性によるもの)
をベースとしました。
そして、それぞれ単独に生成されたパターン、グリッドを重ね合わせることで無限の組み合わせが可能になります。
その為、既成のモジュールの重ね合わせを選択するか、自らそれらを定義するかそれはユーザーの手に委ねられるでしょうね。

Hitspaper：How does one create more than 2000 patterns?
Stefan：NBM delivers an archive of base pattern modules, based on a system exclusively developed for that purpose.
The result at hand rests upon six geometric forms (circle, square, isosceles triangle, rectangular triangle, hexagon, pill exactly ordered according to properties such as size, distance, offset and outline.)

Through superposition, this system guarantees for an infinite number of individually generated patterns or grids.
It's for the user to decide whether he chooses controlled superpositions in order to attain congruent results, or Moiree results through self-defined superposition of modules.

Hitspaper：NBWとNBMは実際に使用可能なデータとしての創成キットを供給しています。
これらの豊富なアイデアの源はあなたの手によって生み出されたのでしょうか？
Stefan：Neubauという名前は隠された意図を持っています。我々は日常的にクライアントの為に、そして、それと同様に私たちの出版物の為にモノ創りをしています。
こういった理由の為に、Neubauは陳腐な表現の制限とは無関係でいられるのです。そして、それだけでなく、ソフトウェアという形態にすることで、買い手にとっては使い勝っ手がよいツールとしても提供したかった。
無意識の内に生命を生み出すこと＝"neubau" (文字通り新しいを形成する)という言葉は、NBWとNBMは共にベクターデータであることにも関係しています。
それらはイラストレーターで自由に編集することが可能だからです。
それによってNBWは、デザインの世界に、多くの人間に使用されることで大きく羽ばたいていきました。
我々が予想した以上にです。

Hitspaper：NBW and NBM serve the concept of construction kits by providing actual data.
What's the idea behind this generous handling of tools created by you?
Stefan：The name Neubau is our agenda, in our daily work for our clients, as well as in our publications.
For this reason, Neubau books up until now are not restricted to a banal picture book concept, but offer the buyer expedient tools in software form.
This automatically animates the user to "neubau" (literally "build newly").
In NBW it's editable vector illustrations and in NBM it's editable patterns.
NBW, in the meantime, has completely arrived in the world of design.
Our expectations were more than exceeded.

Hitspaper：Neabauチームはどのように成長して来たのでしょうか？そしてNBMが出版されるまでどのくらいの年月が必要だったのでしょうか？
Stefan：Neubau は2001年から存続していまして、GandlとGrünbergerが代表を務めています。
勿論、他のデザインスタジオ同様にプロジェクトによってNeubauチームは成長してきましたよ。
NBWに関しては2002年と2005年の間は7人の人間の手によってその後は8人によって構成されています。
制作は主に短いスパンで行われています。何故なら、出版の関係で2005年11月から、2007年中頃までに終わらなければなりませんでしたから。
NBW のチーム構成を紹介するとRothenberger (SUI)、Alexander Lis (GER)、 Alina Günter (SUI)、 Jarrik Muller (NL)、 Jasper van Orden (NL)、 Marianne Kampel (AUT)、 Christoph Grünberger (GER) 、 Stefan Gandl (AUT)といった面々ですね。

Hitspaper：How big is the Neubau team and how long did it take to develop NBM?
Stefan：Neubau exists since 2001 and represents the work of Gandl & Grünberger.
Depending on the project, the Neubau team can grow accordingly.
While with NBW between 2002 and 2005 we were seven people, NBM was created by eight.
This was mainly caused by the shorter time span, because work commenced right after the publication of NBW in November 2005 and had to be finished by the middle of 2007.
The NBM team is: Rothenberger (SUI), Alexander Lis (GER), Alina Günter (SUI), Jarrik Muller (NL), Jasper van Orden (NL), Marianne Kampel (AUT), Christoph Grünberger (GER) & Stefan Gandl (AUT).

Hitspaper：あなたはKlaus Voormannと共にビートルズのカバーデザインを行いました。
彼とのスペシャルコラボレーションはどのようなものでしたか？
Stefan：私はKlausがかつて制作したカバー"Revolver"のようなモノトーンで描ける作家を探していました。
彼の作品は素晴らしくアルバムの音楽と共に、それはいつも私に強烈な魅力と陶酔へと誘ったのです。
そういった意味ではKlausの作品は永続的に私に影響を与えていたと言えるでしょう。
彼と共に行った"Remember" コラボレーションプロジェクトはシングルトラック"Revolver"を視覚的に翻訳したもので、そのアートワークは個人的に人生の道しるべとなる一題プロジェクトになりましたね。少しですが"Remember"のアートワークをNBMで見ることが出来ますよ。

Hitspaper：You are working with Beatles cover designer Klaus Voormann.
What does working with him make it such a special collaboration?
Stefan：I've been haunted by the black and white "Revolver" cover Klaus did ever since.
Together with the album's music it always had a strong attraction and somewhat hypnotic effect on me.
Klaus' work had - among others - a lasting influence on mine.
The collaboration with him during the "Remember" project (The Lost Revolver Booklet), as well as the work of visually translating each single track on "Revolver", which aims to complete the artistic milestone this revord is, is incredibly valuable for me personally.

Hitspaper：次のプロジェクトを教えて下さい。
Stefan：コマーシャルワークに加えて、2008年中にNBMのビデオが公開される予定です。また、大部分はリミテッドプリントに力を入れる予定で、それらは、いずれもウェブサイトで購入可能になりますね。
さらにオランダ：アイントホーフェンで"Neubauism"と呼ばれるエキシビジョンを2008年5月9日〜10日まで開催します。
デザイン業界で伝説のWim Crouwelが2008年9月5日に開催するエキシビジョンも参加するのですがそれも非常に楽しみですね。インタビューありがとうございました。

Hitspaper：What are your next projects?
Stefan：In addition to commercial assignments, the NBM video and upcoming publications in 2008, we mostly concentrate on limited print editions from our manufacture, which can be purchased via our website.
Furthermore, MU in Eindhoven (NL) will host the "Neubauism" exhibition from 05.09. - 05.10.2008.

We feel very honoured that design legend Wim Crouwel will open the premiere with a laudation on Spetmeber th 5th, 2008.
We are very much looking forward to that.
