アジア圏に於いてシンガポールのクリエイティブシーンは、一つの畝となって東南アジアのプラットフォームの一角を占めるようになった。
約500万人足らずのこの小さな国の経済効果は、世界という俯瞰的な指標で計ると決して巨大ではないが、そのフットワークの軽さを武器に文化的領域に力を入れて来た。
小さいからこそ、人の繋がり・連関を肌で感じ易いこの国では、優秀なクリエーターが産まれ始めている。
自らをmulti-disciplinary デザインスタジオと呼ぶ[FARM]は、イベントオーガナイズ、空間デザイン、マガジン、オンラインストアと様々な領域に跨がって活動をする。
彼らの活動の根幹には、コミニティとコミニケーションという人との繋がりが在り、多様性を生き抜くヒントが散りばめられていて、私達、日本でも大きな学びがあるのではないだろうかと思う。
今回はそんな彼らのインタビューを通じて、新しい発見があれば幸いである。
HITSPAPER： [FARM]は様々な専門分野からなるデザインスタジオです。私が知っている限りマガジン、イベント、デザインスタジオ、オンラインストアを運営しています。
まずは、これらの現在の活動について教えてもらえますか？
FARM: 僕らの”ファーム”は、異なる関心を持つ人間が互いに影響し合って、各々のプロットを形成しています。
1つ目のプロジェクト[ROJAK]は、ローカル地域に住むクリエイティブな人達とコミニケーションを図るパーティ・イベント。
2つ目のマガジンは、まだ僕らが望む効果的なメディアとしては機能していませんが、いくつかコンテンツを届けています。
3つ目はデザインスタジオ。空間デザインをベースにしていて、すべての小さな物事を理路整然と空間に溶け込ませる事を目指しています。
最期の4つ目のプロジェクトは、地域のプロダクトをプロデュースし流通に乗せるオンラインストアで、つい最近オープンしました。
HITSPAPER： FARM is multi-disciplinary design studio. From what i know, Magazine, Rojak, design studio, Online Store. Could you tell us about FARM’s activity more detail, please?
FARM: We are FARM because we think like one: having different plots that are influenced by our interests and the makeup of the people in FARM. We have ROJAK, an ongoing sharing party between local creative people; that is our first plot! Magazine is actually made up of a few things, but it’s not working as effectively as we wish and we are shelving it soon. The studio is our design branch where we are interested in making spaces with every little thing coming together coherently. And most recently, we have a store that aims to produce and distribute locally-designed products.
HITSPAPER： イベント[ROJAK]やスタジオの活動を拝見する限り、[FARM]はコミニケーションやコミニティの重要性を理解しているように感じました。FARMは、コミニケーションやコミニティをどのように捉えているのでしょうか？
FARM: [FARM]は、このシンガポールのような小さな国だからこそ、他人との関わり、繋がりの重要性をより強く感じる土壌の上で産まれました。
コミニティの中でコミニケーションをする上で非常に大事な事は、嘘をつかず隠さないこと、議論すること、そして、人に活力を吹き込む事だと思っています。
僕らの国は確かに小さいけれど、新しいアイデアを持った多くの人間が居て、イベント[ROJAK]はそんな彼らが集まるプラットフォームにしたいですね。現在では、このコミニティの多くの人間は友人ですが、[FARM]はそのきっかけを作り続けるもので在りたいですね。
HITSPAPER： I think FARM understand the importance of community and communication. What is your thought of community and communication?
FARM: FARM came along at a time where increasingly we find it important to relate to one another in a small country like Singapore. Even though we are small, there’s many people with new ideas and it is through the platform of ROJAK that we find all sorts of interesting people around us. That’s important to uncover, discuss and energize. Many of them stay as friends and FARM was started this way.
HITSPAPER： デザイナーにとってキュレーションする思考法はとても重要なものですが、FARMにとってキュレーションとは何でしょうか？
FARM: キュレーションとは、プロジェクトにおいて多様にある選択肢をふるいにかけ、最も適したコンディションとクオリティを選択する事です。
また、ときとして、エッセンスを加える事より、減らす事によって最適なプロジェクトに近づく事も多々あると思います。
HITSPAPER： We believe it is important even although being a designer, has a thought of curation. What is FARM’s thought of curation?
FARM: Curation is more of carefully sieving through a list and selecting the most appropriate conditions & qualities for a project. Sometimes, it’s more to do with reduction of things to their essence, than the addition of it.
HITSPAPER：[FARM]の仕事のプロセスを教えて下さい。
FARM: 空間デザインについてのプロセスについて説明しますね。
プロジェクトの初期には、クライアントに系統立てて明確且つ簡潔に概要を説明します。
その後、リサーチのフェーズに移行しますが、プロジェクトに関わる土地の文脈や日程を綿密に調査して、デザインする上でのデータベースとして蓄積していきます。
何故なら、僕らは、多様な背景や意見、視点をもった空間、グラフィック、プロダクトデザイナーが在籍しているので、彼らが迷わない最適なディレクションが必須となるからです。
最終的な成果物は、異なる力が一つに結集する事で、非常にユニークなプロジェクトになって欲しいですね。
HITSPAPER： Could you tell us about FARM’s process of work?
FARM: At the very beginning of the project, we will formulate the brief with our clients. The research work around the context, the program and the site will accumulate to a base in which we will create our design upon. Because FARM is made up of designers of various backgrounds, a discussion on different angles will take place to find the most appropriate ideas that will position the project in the best way that combines spatial, graphics, product design in a singular direction. We want to create unique things and everything within that project will come together.
HITSPAPER： FARMが考えるデザインの可能性とは何ですか？
FARM: 問題を解決する上で不可欠なものであり、そして、その過程も美しいものだと信じています。
HITSPAPER： What do you believe possibility of design?
FARM: We believe it needs to solve problems first, and in the process, solve them beautifully.
HITSPAPER： [FARM]は本当に多様な分野を跨がって活動しています。
その中で、最近ではアートとデザインの境界が非常に曖昧になって来たように感じますが、[FARM]としてはどのように捉えていますか？
FARM: 僕らにとって、それらを囲む環境に聡明な議論が交わされる限り差異はないだろうなと思っています。
僕らのスタジオでのデザインプロセスは、これらの境界を曖昧にさせ、それぞれの領域に共存するものを創造しようとしています。
実験的で挑戦的な仕事であるけれど、同時にクライアントにも僕らと一緒に探求してくれる寛容な開拓精神が必要になって来ます。
開拓精神と言えば、[ROJAK]は、特定のクリエーターのものではなく、あなたがアーティストであろうと、建築家であろうと、デザイナーであろうと、シェフであろうと全く拘りません。
それは、領域が曖昧になっているという事は、各々の方法論を議論して新しい発見を得る事が出来る裏返しでもあると思うからです。
HITSPAPER： We feel it is blurring boundaries lines between art and design.
What is FARM’s thought of relationship art and design?
FARM: For us, there’s no distinction as long as there’s an intellectual discourse that surrounds it. In the design work in our studio, we try to blur these boundaries and create something that resides in both the realms of art and design. It’s always an experiment and challenge to do that, and we also need very open-minded clients who will explore with us. In ROJAK, we choose to include anyone who creates, no matter whether you are an artist, architect, designer or chef as long as the process and the methodology can be discussed.
HITSPAPER： FARMのミッションを教えて下さい。
FARM: 絶え間なく変わる各領域のぼやけた境界を跨ぎ歩み続ける事。
そして、僕たちが活動している今現在をより洗練させていく事です。
HITSPAPER： Could you tell us about FARM’s future(mission)?
FARM: We will continue to tread along this ever-changing and blurring of boundaries and keep on refining what we are doing now.
HITSPAPER： 今後、シンガポールのクリエイティブ・シーンはどのように変化していくと思いますか? また、社会において[FARM]はどのような役割を演じる事になると思いますか？
FARM: 一般的に言及するとクリエティブ・シーンは開かれていくと思います。
多くの人間、政治家も含めアート・デザインに対してより注意を払っていくようになりますし、多くの学校等の教育機関は、アート・デザインと繋がり相互連関し開かれていくし、文化的、経済的な重要性を伝達していくようになるのではないでしょうか。
スタジオとしては、ちょうど良い時期に差し掛かっていますが、今後はバズを引き起こす仕掛人として役割を担って行きたいと思っています。
特に、ローカルから突き上げるような力、そこに、ちょっとした泥臭さとちょっとした狂気を持ってね！
HITSPAPER： How do you think the singapore scene wii be changing? And what do you think your role as design studio in the society?
FARM: The society in general is opening up. More people, the government including, are paying more attention to art and design. More schools and institutions relating to such fields have opened, signaling their importance both culturally and economically. As a studio, we are in good times and we are trying to define ourselves in all this buzz. In particular, we want to be something that is very local, a bit of madness, a bit messed up!
HITSPAPER： アート・デザインは、地球上で起っている様々な問題、金融危機や紛争、テロリズム、環境問題においてどのような役割を担うと考えますか？
FARM: それらの問題は、複雑な奥行きをもった複数の軸、主に異なる視座による対立がセットされています。
それらを解決するには、寛容性と叡智の資質を磨く必要がある。
アート・デザインが扱う領域や分野は非常に異なる範囲だから、たぶん役割は、起っている現状から読み解いた問題提起の誘発や教育、そして、沈思の時間を促す事かもしれません。
HITSPAPER： Do you think “Art, Design” could be the solution for serious problems happening in the world like finance crisis, war, terrorism or environment, issues?
FARM: Those issues stem from a more complex set of perspectives, mainly the conflict of differing (and sometimes opposing) viewpoints. To solve them, they require more of the qualities of openness and wisdom. They are in a very different sphere in what ‘Art & Design’ deal with. But perhaps, what ‘Art & Design’ can do is to educate, provoke and ask meaningful questions about the current state that we are in, and allow us a moment of reflection.
HITSPAPER： 最期に日本人に向けてメッセージを下さい。
FARM: 僕らはいつも日本を愛しているし、文化そして人間に深く魅了されて来ました。日本から学ぶべき事は本当に多く在ります。
けれど、機会があれば是非シンガポールを訪れて欲しいですね！
東南アジアの各々の文化が融合した予測出来ない素晴らしい街を探求して欲しいし、僕らはいつも日本人を歓迎しますよ！
HITSPAPER： In conclusion, can I have the message from you to the Japanese people?
FARM: We have always loved Japan and are deeply fascinated by your culture and people. There is just so much to learn from Japan. But to the Japanese people, come to Singapore if you have the chance! We welcome you to explore this wonderful and sometimes quirky city at the crossroads of many wonderful South East Asian cultures.
