デジタルとフィジカルの領域を行き来するコンポーザー/メディアアーティストの「マーティン・メシエ」。
ソー イング・マシンメーカーであるシンガー社の1940年代に製造されたマシンをコントロールし、楽器化するなど、日常に転がるオブジェクトを異なった用途に 変換する。ノスタルジックなオブジェクトを現代のテクノロジーで命を吹き込むさまは、過去と現代を繋ぐアーティストとも謂えるかもしれない。
今回は、そんなマーティン・メシエに作品の理念や、プロジェクトへのアプローチについて話を窺った。
Hitspaper： 自己紹介をお願いします。
Martin： 私はモントリオールの郊外にある一般的な家庭で育ちました。その当時、私の周辺の環境では、アートに精通している人間は一人もいませんでしたね。
アートへの道を歩む一歩となったのは、10代の時にパンクミュージックに魅了された時からです。
その後、ドラムや作曲を勉強したのですが、少しづつダンス、映画、ビデオなどにも興味が広がって行きました。
Hitspaper： Could you tell us about your history, please?
Martin： I grow in a suburbs near Montreal in a normal familly. No one in my entourage when I grow up was involved in arts. As a teenager I’ve been attracted by punk music and this leads me to arts. I then studied drums and music composition but my interest in visual arts brought me to explore all sort of arts forms (dance, theater, performance, video).
Hitspaper： あなたの作品は、テクノロジーとアナログ手法が織混ざっています。
こうした作品を通じて、表現、探求したいことは何ですか？
Martin： 回顧録やノスタルジックは共に私の中で、興味深い事柄です。古いもので、更に実用性があるものは特にね。
また、私は音楽が非常に好きなので、こうした私達の周辺に存在するすべてのアイデアを音楽に変換するのです。
Hitspaper： Your artwork combined technology and analog. What are you trying to seek and express through your work?
Martin： Memories and nostalgies are certainly topics of interests for me. I’m really interested in making old things and functionnal objects alive! I like this idea everything around us can create music.
Hitspaper： アナログとテクノロジーの関係性をどのように捉えていますか？
Martin： 両者の関係性は、常に対称性を保持していると考えています。
Hitspaper： What do you think about the relationship between analog and technology?
Martin： The relationship is the opposition between them.
Hitspaper： それぞれのプロジェクトにおいて異なるアプローチがありますか？
Martin： まず、コンセプトを選択して、その後、それらの境界線を探求します。それぞれのプロジェクト自体ですでに投げかけている問題は十分に興味深い事柄なので、個々のプロジェクトで独立していると言っても良いかもしれません。
包括的に捉えて、すべての側面から鑑えみることはとても重要な事ですが、その中でも音楽の領域は別格ですね。
Hitspaper： Is there a specific way you approach each project, please explain.
Martin： I always start by choosing a concept and then I tried to stay between these bounderies. Each projects has its own problematic so it always depends. All aspects are important but sound is always my main concern.
Hitspaper： 特に、”SEWING MACHINE ORCHESTRA”と呼ばれるプロジェクトが好きなのですが、このコンセプトを教えて下さい。
Martin： 本当に懐古的なオブジェクトが好きなのですが、この時のプロジェクトでは、8台の古く極めて美しいマシンとの出会いがありました。
これらのマシンは、正確にリズムを刻むようにコントロールする事が可能です。
古き良きオブジェクトが、現代の日常にある惰性の毎日に、強烈な音楽のメッセージを伝搬する これがこのプロジェクトの目的となりますね。
Hitspaper： In particular, I went to your artwork called “SEWING MACHINE ORCHESTRA”. Please tell us about the concept?
Martin： I really love old objects and this is what brings me to put these beautiful 8 old machines on stage to create Sewing Machine Orchestra. These machines can be controlled with lot of precisions rythmically.
My aim in this project is to push forward our day to day imaginary by looking to these machines creating an intense piece of music.
Hitspaper： 未来のビジョンについて教えて下さい。
Martin： 未来のことは、あまり考えていませんね。
あえて言及するならば、イリュージョンようなプロジェクトを2つ程、制作しています。巧くいくと良いのですが。。。
Hitspaper： Could you tell us about future?
Martin： I don’t really have future plan. I just have a couple of phantasmagoric projects I hope I will be able to do.
Hitspaper： 社会の中で、メディア・アーティストの役割は何だと思いますか？
Martin： 私は、メディア・アートやアートに同じような見解を持っています。
アートは世界をより良く理解する上で大切な手法の一つで、私達に異なった視点を与えてくれる役割を担っていると思います。
Hitspaper： What do you think is your role as media artist in world(society)?
Martin： I have the same opinion for arts than for media arts. Arts is for me a way to have a better understanding of our world, to help us see thing in a different angles.
Hitspaper： 最後に日本人に向けてメッセージをお願いします。
