香港で育ち、幼少の頃から香港のアートやカルチャーに影響を受けて来たジョン・ウー。
ペインターでありイラストレーターでもある彼は、そうした文脈を受け継ぎ、現代のファッション、アートに絶妙にインテグレートする能力をもったアーティストだ。
香港という都市で吸収したカルチャーをどのように作品に落としこんでいるか彼の文脈に興味は尽きない。
今回は、香港のイラストレーターとして次代を牽引するジョン・ウーに話を窺った。
Hitspaper： 自己紹介をお願いします。
John Woo： 名前はジョン・ウー。映画「フェイス・オフ」の監督ではなく、デザイナー、イラストレーターです。しかし、彼と私は、かなりの共通点があります。香港で育ち、共にアートが好きですから。デザインは香港のローカルスクールで学びましたが、多くは独学です。
Hitspaper： Could you tell us about your history, please?
John Woo： My name is John Woo, not the “Face off” director. I am a designer and illustrator. But I quite sure we have many things in common. We both love art, grow up in Hong Kong. I studied design in local school, and most of times, I study by myself.
Hitspaper： あなたが制作したスター・ウォーズプロジェクトは非常に素晴らしいものでした。このプロジェクトについてコンセプトや詳細を教えて下さい。
John Woo： まず、私が幼少の頃からスター・ウォーズの大ファンだったという事をお伝えしなければなりません。
登場するキャラクターにもかなり影響を受けましたし、現在でもレゴ版のコレクターでもあるし、家の中はスター・ウォーズだらけなので。
こ のプロジェクトのアイデアは、私の妻と友人について話をしていた時に生まれたものです。私の友人が来ている服が、スター・ウォーズのキャラクターと同じよ うなスタイルで、例えばジャー・ジャー・ビンクスのベルボトムパンツや、ダース・ベイダーのように全身黒ずくめであったり。
こうしたアイデアの原点から、より現代風に、より面白くする為、彼らの古いファッション・スタイルからよりスタイリッシュなファッションを落としこむことにしました。
キャ ラクターの中で最も好きなダース・ベイダーは、私のお気に入りのブランド「バンド・オブ・アウトサイダー(band of outsider)」着せたかったし、他のキャラクターにも、お気に入りのブランドを選択しました。とりわけ、ジャー・ジャー・ビンクスはマッチしたと思 いますよ。
Hitspaper： It was wonderful work that you made a star wars project. Tell us about concept and more detail?
John Woo： I grown up with watching the star wars movies, those characters are deeply affected me, and I really crazy about it, I ‘m also a collector of Star Wars Lego, which are everywhere in my home. I started the idea of drawing this “HE WEARS IT” series, it was happened one time I and my wife were talking about some of our friends look like star war characters, especially their dressing styles, such as Jar Jar Binks like to wear bell bottom pants and Darth Vader always wears black. From here, a shot in the dark, it should be a dressing revolution for the Star Wars; Darth Vader has to take away his old-fashion calculator at front of his clothes, Jar Jar Blink has to take off his bell-shape bottom pants, and change to be a stylish buddies. Darth Vader is my favorite one, so he should wear my favorite brand “band of outsider”. And others are also wearing the brand I like and matching their characters and appearance, I especially love Jar Jar Binks’s new outfit.
Hitspaper： どのように現在のスタイルを確立しましたか？
John Woo： 現在のスタイルを見つけたのは、とてもシンプルな事ですよ。私は本当に、(理論ではなく)水彩絵具やアクリルを使用して絵を描く事が好きなだけですから。
Hitspaper： How did you find the way of making?
John Woo： Not really try hard to find a way to make them, I like painting with watercolor and acrylic, so I use them when I want to.
Hitspaper： 作品を通じて表現、探求したいことは何ですか？
John Woo： 日常の生活の中の感情ですね。瞬間を切り取って、それを作品に反映させていると思います。
Hitspaper： What are you trying to seek and express through your work?
John Woo： My work has just reflected my daily life, and expressed my emotion at the moment.
Hitspaper： 作品を制作する時、あなたが心掛けている事は何ですか？
John Woo： 他の事は一切考えず、作品制作だけに没頭する事です。
Hitspaper： When you draw your artwork, what is it to keep in mind?
John Woo： I’ve just concentrated on my works when I’ve been doing, and forgot all other things.
Hitspaper： 最近の傾向として、人々はクリエーター特にイラストレーターにどのような事を求めていると感じますか？
John Woo： 高度な技術に興味が向いていると思います。ここで言う高度な技術とは、デジタルテクノロジーを指します。
そうですね。例えばアバターなど。しかし一方で、伝統的な高度な技術、アシュリー・ウッド(Ashley Wood)やデイブ・ホワイト(Dave White)など彼らのハンドクラフトのペインティングの技術も多く注目されていると感じます。
Hitspaper： As recent trend, what kinds of things do you see people demanding from creator particular, illustrator?
John Woo： I think the extremely things can catch people’s eyes; extremely things mean extremely digital technology, example like the movie Avatar; or extremely traditional skills, like Ashley Wood, Dave White, their wonderful skill of hand- painting or some hand make works.
Hitspaper： イラストレーターとしてのあなたの役割は何だと思いますか？
John Woo： 私は時々イラストレーターではないのではと思う事があります。ペインターに近いようなイメージですね。何故なら、イラストレーターはよりコマーシャル寄りで、ペインターはフリースタイルですから。
Hitspaper： well then What do you think is your role as Illustrator?
John Woo： I think I am not really an illustrator sometimes, but a painter, because an illustrator is more commercial, and a painter can draw freely.
Hitspaper： 世界では深刻な問題が起こっています。金融危機、紛争、テロリズム、環境問題、こうした問題に対して、アートやデザインは解決の方法に成り得ると思いますか？
John Woo： アート・デザインは人々の心を癒す力があると信じている。もし、それらの感情をアートで表現する事が出来るのであれば、世界はよりピースフルとなるでしょう。
Hitspaper： Do you think that art&design could be the solution for serious problems happening in the world like finance crisis, war, terrorism or environment, issues?
John Woo： I believe art & design can treat people’s heart. People if can express their emotion on art, the world will be more peaceful.
Hitspaper： 最後に日本人に向けてメッセージをお願いします。
John Woo： 心を自由に解放させ、愛情を表現して欲しいと思います。日本人はもっと自由とアートを楽しむべきだと思います。
Hitspaper： In conclusion, can I have the message from you to the Japanese people?
John Woo： Get yourself free, express your love. Japanese should enjoy their freedom on making art.
